The trend toward bold, topical and volatile themes in the works of this latest generation of filmmakers that became apparent after the first round of decisions has been substantiated and extended by some fascinating elements.
For instance, the stories of the feature films Die Dinge zwischen uns (The Things Between Us) by Iris Janssen and Die Besucherin (In Between Days) by Lola Randl are about how women not only fight with more pluck than men for happiness, but also are willing to take more unusual measures in doing so.
The title of the film Helden aus der Nachbarschaft (Heroes from the Neighbourhood) by Jovan Arsenic can also be regarded as programmatic. In his tragicomedy, Arsenic leaves the fates of six neighbours in Prenzlauer Berg to chance - which, of course, is preordained.
Pola Schirin Beck’s film In Deiner Haut (Inside You), Film and Television Academy-HFF "Konrad Wolf"/Potsdam, explores a specific but not uncommon problem in an everyday phenomenon, the patchwork family: a new relationship blossoms right when the kids, who have been raised by one parent, are in the middle of puberty.
The protagonists in Sebastian Heidinger’s documentary Drifter, on the other hand, are left to their own devices. They are the new children of Bahnhof Zoo. Without a trace of voyeurism, this co-production with the dffb (German Film And Television Academy Berlin) sensitively tells of people and places that are outside the perception of mainstream society.
As a crossover screening combining both the Perspektive and Generation 14 plus sections, the documentary film love, peace & beatbox by Volker Meyer-Dabisch will be shown for the public on the last day of the festival.
This work takes a warm and entertaining look at a new chapter in the history of pop culture and society.
Ten of the thirteen contributions in Perspektive Deutsches Kino are screening as world premieres; eleven of the films are competing for the "Dialogue en Perspective" prize. Sponsored by TV 5 Monde and the German-French Youth Office, this prize is being awarded for the fifth time this year. And as no longer unusual, the directors or co-directors of more than half of the films are women.
