- This state-of-the-art press underscores the Veitsch plant’s status as a high-performance, innovative refractories production site
- The press produces refractory bricks up to 1,400 mm long, thus opening up a previously inaccessible market segment in the steel industry
In the presence of mayor Erwin Dissauer, RHI CEO Andreas Meier, Head of Production Ingo Gruber and project manager Johann Dieter, the manager of the Veitsch plant, Walter Rosenzweig, officially commissioned the new hydraulic press today. Exactly 17 months ago Austrian president Heinz Fischer had participated in the ground-breaking ceremony for this major investment at the celebrations marking the 125th anniversary of the production site. Following very successful tests, production of the longest converter bricks worldwide has now been launched.
This high-tech hydraulic press operates at a maximum press capacity of 3,200 tonnes. It is thus possible for the first time to manufacture refractory brick shapes with a length of up to 1,400 mm. This is a technological quantum leap. The maximum length produced previously was 900 mm in Veitsch and 1,200 mm in the Group. Bricks and ecologically compatible magnesia carbon types up to the absolute top segment are thus available to the customer now.
RHI Chairman of the Management Board, Andreas Meier: "Today RHI is the only refractories company worldwide that is in a position to offer such a high-grade product to its customers in the steel industry. This way we once again prove our technological leadership."
The new, fully-automated hydraulic press is a 100% in-house development by RHI, equipped with state-of-the-art hydraulic and electronic components. All components were supplied by machine and steel building companies from the region. Total investments amounted to € 2.15 million.
With the commissioning of this new plant, the project "High-tech Ceramic Components" has been successfully completed. Within the framework project, investments amounting to nearly € 10 million were made in the Veitsch plant in the past three years. In the course of restructuring, the requirements and needs of customers and their kilns were consistently taken into account. Further investments are planned for the coming years in order to secure technology leadership.
Plant manager Walter Rosenzweig: "The location Veitsch proves that tradition and innovation are not mutually exclusive but rather complement each other. The experience and expertise of our 330 employees, combined with the ambitious investment and upgrading programme, have made the plant the highest-performance refractories production site and secured jobs in the long run."
For the current financial year Rosenzweig expects production to total a record 240,000 tonnes. Veitsch contributes more than 10% to RHI’s production worldwide.
