Once a year in October, millions of people are looking forward to entering the official DVLottery which makes available 55,000 permanent residence visas to applicants otherwise underrepresented by the US immigration system.
In an effort to limit the number of participants, the Trump administration has recently tightened the rules. One of the new requirements, which is to enter a valid passport number, effectively disqualifies up to 90% of the population in countries where passports are fairly uncommon. This includes countries like Russia, Ukraine, Nepal, Egypt, Kenya and many others, where the lottery had been extremely popular.
The new rules will most likely decrease the number of applicants from more than 16 million in 2018 to less than 5 million this year. On a positive note, a lower turn-out may up to triple the chances for all other candidates who are in possession of a valid travel document and carefully follow the instructions at www.dvlottery.com. In times when immigration to the US has become harder and harder, this is a chance not to be missed.
