Last Friday people from all over Europe set course for the holiday destination Zell am See-Kaprun, where this oneofakind event promised its visitors fun and entertainment once again. And it was not least the intent to cut a world record on Saturday that guaranteed for a mixture of enthusiasm and incredulousness. As many as 16 young ladies of a cheerleader team from Innsbruck were able to squeeze into just one smart fortwo, thus cutting the former world record of 15 passengers. It did not exactly look comfortable but a record is a record.
About 4,000 people from all over the world could not afford to miss this cult festival staged in Zell am See and Kaprun. In glorious, sunny weather, the smart community met at Zell's airfield to 'check in' for the event. Some participants who could not wait for the 2010 edition of the smart times to kick off had come to the region some days in advance to enjoy the supporting programme in the runup including a 'Power Drive' race, the opportunity to test the new smart with an electric drive, and a leisurely ride around Lake Zell.
The blue heart of the region which boasts drinkingwater quality was at the focus on Saturday, too. Just like in previous years, smart drivers were invited to join the meanwhile traditional parade along the shore of Lake Zell. More than 600 out of 800 cars had met at the airfield before to form a long line. Finally at 11 am the cars set out to roam the region lined up like beads on a string. For many participants of the smart times this was the undisputed highlight of the weekend.
The parade had strong competition, though. In an amazing show consisting of two parts, stuntmen demonstrated that the tiny cars hide more under their bonnets than can be assumed at first sight. In addition, three bodybuilders flexed their muscles and hauled five smarts over a distance of 40 metres. On Friday and Saturday evening, the parties at the marquee and at Kaprun Castle offered guests of the smart times the perfect opportunity to enjoy a drink and great music after sunset.
