The FieldRobotEvent, started in 2003 by the University of Wageningen, is considered to be the "world championship of autonomous field robots" and was held for the first time by the University of Applied Sciences of Osnabrück from 12th to 14th June, 2008. Main sponsor of the FieldRobotEvent 2008 were the Amazonen-Werke with their headquarter in Hasbergen-Gaste. The manufacturer for agricultural machinery, considering the field robots to be a big future potential for agricultural application, not only supported the event but also promotes the relevant research and development at the Univertity of Applied Sciences of Osnabrück.
Twelve student teams from Finland, Denmark, The Netherlands, Switzerland and Germany with their agricultural robots had applied for this world championship. Of course, the team of the University of Applied Sciences of Osnabrück participated, who, with their newly developed and still absolutely young robot named "Agronaut" presented themselves in all competitions straightaway amazingly successfully. Final winner was a student team from the Technical University Helsinki (Finland).
With an additional field robot named "Weedy" the University of Applied Sciences of Osnabrück simultaneously introduced the autonomous platform for a weed robot. Also "Weedy" is sponsored by Amazone and equipped with more than 20 sensors, seven cameras and four motors.
