The Australian Government's trade and investment development agency, Austrade, will help showcase Australian expertise at the world's largest medical fair, MEDICA (18-21 November 2009).
"The 30 innovative Australian companies heading to Medica will get to demonstrate their products to a phenomenal audience of 137,000 trade visitors representing around 100 countries," said Janelle Casey, Austrade's National Industry Manager, Health & Biotech.
"It's a fantastic opportunity for these businesses to meet interested buyers, find new partners, negotiate sales and analyse the international competition."
The medical technology industry in Australia had a turnover of A$6 billion in 2008. The Medical and Surgical device sector contributed to over A$2.8 billion, with exports of A$1.7 billion.
The Australian Health and Medical Industry is characterised by a small number of global multinational companies (approximately 20 per cent of the industry) and a large number of small and medium sized enterprises (80 per cent of the industry).
"Australian medical discoveries have improved the quality of health for people the world over. These have included advancements in cochlear implants, the cervical cancer vaccine (Gardasil), sleep apnea devices(ResMed), and penicillin," said Ms Casey.
"Our highly skilled workforce is also acknowledged with nine Australians awarded Nobel Prizes in science and medicine. We also rank number one when compared to competitor countries as a location to conduct clinical trials.
"We have many global advantages including offering reduced time to market compared with drug discovery, and a close geographic proximity within the Asia Pacific region.
"Australia's products and services are also characterised by their high quality, safety and cost effectiveness which is determined by our regulatory body (Therapeutic and Goods Administration)."

- IRtek (WA) - offers non-contact thermal solution to detect feverish or pathologic condition of targets witzh H1N1 (swine flu), H5N1 (bird flu), SARS or similar.
- Clik-Lok Australia Pty Ltd (NSW) - manufactures safety syringes designed to reduce the risk of needle stick injuries for health care professionals' world wide.
- Medi + Bioactive Honey Company (VIC) - Australian certified organic antibacterial honey including the world's strongest antibacterial honeys.
- Tyrian Diagnostics (NSW) - a company with expertise in biomarker discovery and validation and diagnostic test development and a core focus on respiratory and infectious diseases.
- Mediplas Pty Ltd (VIC) - design and manufacture of high quality adult and neonatal plastic respiratory components and equipment.
- Elevate Technologies (VIC) - a Health IT company, specialising in areas of telecommunications, online application development, Internet security and mobile development.
