As one main event of its centenary that will be celebrated in November 2007 the DAI is preparing jointly with the Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA) a special exhibition in the Egyptian Musuem in Cairo. It will be opened on November 19th. In this exhibit, selected objects from the following current excavation projects of the DAI will be displayed:
1.Elephantine: town and temples on the island at the first cataract of the Nile opposite the modern city of Aswan
2.Dra’ Abu el-Naga/Western Thebes: royal and private necropoleis of the Middle Kingdom, the Second Intermediate Period and the New Kingdom opposite the modern city of Luxor
3.Abydos: the royal cemetery of Umm el-Qaab
4.Maadi: a predynastic settlement at the border of modern Cairo
5.Buto: the settlement and sacred site in the North-western Delta
6.Abu Mina: the most important early Christian pilgrimage center of the ancient world
The majority of the objects have been stored until now in storerooms at the excavation sites and will be exhibited to the public for the first time. Besides the aforementioned current projects, the earlier work of the DAI will also be presented. These will be represented by selected finds: the seated sandstone statue of the general of the troops, Intef, from his tomb in Western Thebes; objects from the foundation deposit found in the temple of king Seti I in Qurna; the small clay neolithic head from Merimde-Benisalâme.
With this exhibtion the DAI Cairo will present the results of its research to a broader public.The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue that will be available in three languages:German, English and Arabic.
