The new gateway terminal will be constructed at logport II. The trimodal terminal will be erected on a 35,000 sq.m. site which can be extended. It will feature four semi-train tracks and a crane for ship and train cargo transfer. The crane and the 310 meters quay wall will be completed by the end of 2008. Waterfront cargo handling operations will be the responsibility of the duisport Group.
The new transportation chain which will link the Upper Rhine and the Lower Rhine by barges will connect Duisburg directly with the ZARA (Zeebrugge, Antwerp, Rotterdam and Amsterdam) range ports. It will accelerate and substantially upgrade cargo flow on this route. "The new terminal will facilitate transportation scheduling and clearly improve Upper Rhine connections to the North Sea," said Staake.
"Our terminal will be located directly on the Rhine and is therefore ideal for gateway traffic. We will continue to develop this system," commented Heinz Bartels who is a managing director of Imperial Logistics International. The future terminal operator also plans to run feeder trains similar to the Ost-Westfalen-Xpress. This container shuttle train was started nearly a year ago and links Duisburg and Unna on five days a week. The full train is operated by duisport rail, a subsidiary of Duisburger Hafen AG, for Rhein-Ruhr Terminal (RRT).
Imperial Logistics International, a subsidiary of Imperial Holdings Limited, a South African Group, controls the logistics business of the Group. Apart from the Rhein-Ruhr Terminal in Duisburg, the organization owns an entire network of container terminals on the Rhine. "The new logport II gateway terminal is firmly integrated in a strategy we have been pursuing for many years," confirmed Bartels.
