Sun Protection Market Grew in 2011 by 3,4%

The sun protection market is growing. In all countries analyzed across Europe, except for Spain, the market developed in 2011 by 3,4% in terms of value, and 1,5% in terms of quantity. The market is expected to increase in 2012 by 5,6% in terms of Value and by 4,2% in terms of quantity, according to the market study conducted by Interconnection Consulting. Seven different countries were analyzed by the consultancy company: Italy, Spain, France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Poland. The markets in Blinds, Window Shutters and Roller Shutters are increasing more than in windows, mainly due to the acceleration in the renovation segment.

Roller Shutters Market Increasing More than Windows Market The market for roller shutters was developing in most countries parallel to the windows market, but this trend changed in 2010 and in most countries the roller shutter's development is now higher than in windows. In Europe, the top 6 countries had sold more than 15,6 million units of Roller shutters in 2011 reaching 2.589 Million €. Aluminium roller shutters represented 65,2% of the market, followed by PVC with 27% and Steel with 5,6%.

Energy saving awareness, and a more positive outlook for the construction sector are important drivers across Europe's top 6 countries. The market that is expected to increase to 5,6% in terms of value, and 4,2% in terms of quantity anticipates to reach the 16,8 million units and 2.734 million € in 2012.

Renovation as a Growth Engine

With many households across Europe installing shutters and blinds, renovation in the residential sector is climbing. In terms of value this segment is accountable for 64% of the total market. This trend will be reinforced during the upcoming years as many residential buildings are facing renovation projects in order to meet the energy saving standards. New window shutters will replace the current windows and protection systems. This represents an important opportunity for the window shutter companies. A similar situation is happening within the renovation of non-residential buildings, the market is increasing, although in this case the percentage of new construction is higher than in the residential.

Motorization Rates Increasing in Most Countries

Regarding the motorization of roller shutters, in Europe around 5,5 million units are expected to be sold within 2012, while the manually operated roller shutters are reaching the 10,4 million units. Approximately 35% of the total market will be electrically operated shutters. The motorization rate of roller shutters is increasing each year, seeing higher development than the manually operated shutters

Regarding the distribution channels, the manufacturers represent 39,2%, followed by direct distribution with 28,2% and indirect with 25,6%. Within the DYI market, the distribution increased across the Top 6 countries by 4,6%, a similar percentage registered within the industry, although the last one is the most important for the Window Shutters manufacturers.
