Since 2010, the non-profit portal is operated privately without government support or funding. "The variety of requests we get from both hearing impaired as well as hearing users, shows the urgent need for information, which we cover with our service. In addition to the requests, we receive praise and good ideas from the deaf community", said Judit Nothdurft, initiator and manager of the page.
There are nearly 600 nationwide contact details of 180 branches online. Annually about 100 new contact details are recorded. The widest-ranging sector is "consulting services" with 108 entries, where often many employees can sign. The largest increase is observed in the tourist sector. The number of urban and museum tours in sign language in recent years is growing particularly strong.
In Germany 16 million hearing impaired are living, around 200.000 of them communicate in sign language. As currently only about 500 sign language interpreters are active nationwide, the contacts with sign language skills on www.deafservice.de are particularly important to enable independent living and acting for the hearing impaired.
