"We are pleased and proud to open our 600th store in Novosibirsk", said Thomas M.Hübner, CEO of METRO Cash & Carry International GmbH. "With this move, we are further driving our international expansion while at the same time demonstrating our competence in logistics. With locations in 28 countries throughout Europe, Africa and Asia we are already now the most international company in this line of business. And in just a few days time we will open our first wholesale store in Lahore, Pakistan."
International expansion is one of the pillars of METRO Cash & Carry, which opened its first wholesale store more than 40 years ago in the German city Mühlheim an der Ruhr. A pioneering spirit and entrepreneurial courage always ranked among the key virtues of METRO Cash & Carry and make it the food trader with the broadest international base. In many countries such as China, Russia, India or Pakistan, the Duesseldorf-based company was the first international player to start operations.
Today, METRO Cash & Carry with its more than 100,000 employees caters to over 20 million commercial customers on three continents. "What we achieved until today was only possible through the great efforts and outstanding performance of our employees", stated Thomas Hübner.
The new store in Novosibirsk is the first location of METRO Cash & Carry in Siberia. The opening – more than 3,000 kilometers away from Moscow – represents a major challenge in terms of logistics. METRO Cash & Carry is a pioneer in this region and supports the establishment of efficient transport and retails structures. The trucks, for example, have to be equipped with the latest air conditioning systems to cool the food in summer and "heat" it during the glacial winter months. This is the only way to ensure that the professional customers will always find high-quality products on the shelves.
More than 25,000 articles from the food and nonfood assortments will be available in the new METRO Cash & Carry store with a selling space of nearly 7,500 sqm. If all preconditions are fulfilled, METRO Cash & Carry will soon open more locations in Siberia: the company is planning further wholesale stores both in Omsk and also in Krasnojarsk. Novosibirsk – the third largest city in the Russian Federation – will take the function of a regional center and play a pioneering role in the opening up of the entire region.
