The Helen Bamber Foundation has been working with victims of Human Rights Abuses since it was founded in 2005. The clients that we work with have survived severe atrocities including torture, trafficking, war and conflict as well as gender based and family violence. The psychological impact of these events is profound. In addition, clients of the Foundation are battling legal and social processes that can appear to be deliberately frustrating and exacerbate distress. Asylum seekers are often living in fear of return to a country where they have experienced severely traumatic events. How as therapists can we understand the impact of previous trauma and of living with ongoing uncertainty and danger, whereby past traumatic events can also have a future? The holistic approach of care and protection offered by the Helen Bamber Foundation is outlined and discussed.
Dr Katy Robjant is a consultant clinical psychologist specialising in treating refugees, asylum seekers and victims of trafficking, who have experienced trauma, and has a number of publications in this area. She has carried out research looking at the impact of different stages of the asylum process, including detention, on mental health. She specialises in the treatment of complex PTSD and other emotional problems arising from multiple and prolonged trauma. She has worked in national specialist centres for the treatment of this client group in the UK and overseas. She is a member of Vivo International and has extensive experience in using and training in Narrative Exposure Therapy.
