Impressive, victorious wines from Austria
The Grüner Veltliner Ried Kremser Thurnerberg 2017 – Erste Lage 1ÖTW from Kremstal is a Grüner Veltliner with a mineral character. “At first glance, the Kremser Thurnerberg doesn’t seem that spectacular, but upon closer inspection, you will find sections of perfect soil, stone on stone, up to a grain size of 30 cm,” says Franz Türk, a reputable Kremstal vintner. Working the land is a demanding task, and the vines are not exactly spoiled either. It takes many years for the roots to penetrate deep into the soil and for great qualities to thrive even in dry years. The wines are focused and always boast a certain finesse and minerality.
The designation 1ÖTW – Erste Lage represents the best vineyard locations of the region and distinguishes Winery Türk as a member of the “Österreichische Traditionsweingüter”, the association of traditional Austrian wineries, comparable to the “Premier cru” in France.
Austria’s autochthonous grape variety is growing increasingly popular in professional circles, and its potential is also valued on the international winegrowing scene. “I’m delighted that our autochthonous grape variety is gaining recognition. After our victory at the IWC in San Francisco, where one of our Grüner Veltliner beat all other types of white wine to take the crown in the dry white wine category, this Challenge represents a further step in drawing attention to Austria’s quality wines. With 0.8% of the world’s cultivation area, we must make wine lovers aware of the fact that on top of Mozart and skiing, Austria also offers wines of international calibre.“
In Austria, Grüner Veltliner covers 14,500 hectares, amounting to 31% of the country’s total vineyard acreage. Vintners love this variety due to its diversity, which allows them to delight wine enthusiasts with everything from a refreshingly light white wine to a rich single estate wine. It also has tremendous maturing potential.
A winery with tradition and history
The roots of Winery Türk can be traced back to the early 18th century. Passionate vintners have dedicated themselves to winegrowing on today’s operating site in the wine village of Stratzing since 1836. The family-owned business cultivates around 20 ha, more than 70% of which is planted with Grüner Veltliner – more than half of which is then exported. As a member of Austria’s leading winegrowing association, “Österreichische Traditionsweingüter”, Franz Türk is an advocate of origins and classification of vineyard locations. The best locations within a region are distinguished as “Erste Lage”.
